Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy (BHRT) Q&A

What is bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT)?

Your hormones are responsible for many of your body’s basic functions. They help regulate your mood, weight, temperature, and digestion. While there are many types of hormones that your body produces, the most common are estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.

When these hormones become imbalanced, you can look and feel unlike yourself. Anyone who experiences a hormone imbalance can experience significant changes in their mood, cognitive function, and appearance.

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy uses manmade hormones that come from plant estrogens to restore balance to your hormones.

While there are many different types of BHRT that can mimic the hormones your body already produces, ANU Medspa uses BioTE® pellet therapy.

What can bioidentical hormone replacement therapy treat?

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy can help improve the symptoms of the following conditions:

Menopause

Menopause marks a time in a woman’s life when she no longer menstruates, causing a dip in estrogen. That can lead to many uncomfortable symptoms, including hot flashes, vaginal dryness, anxiety and depression, weight gain, insomnia, mood swings, and low libido, as well as a loss of bone density.

Andropause

Similar to menopause, andropause typically occurs when a man is middle-aged and stops producing enough testosterone. In many men, andropause can lead to increased fat around the abdomen, erectile dysfunction (ED), reduced body hair, and a decrease in muscle mass.

Low testosterone (low T)

Low testosterone causes many of the same symptoms as andropause. While it can happen at any age, low T most often occurs in middle-aged men and older adults.

Studies show that natural testosterone is highly preventive against certain cancers, osteoporosis, and dementia from Alzheimer’s disease.

How does bioidentical hormone replacement therapy work?

The team at ANU Medspa places the BioTE pellet implant underneath the skin, typically near the hip. These implants are no larger than the size of a grain of rice and slowly release predetermined levels of hormones as they dissolve over time.

We use all methods of bioidentical hormone therapy, including pellets, in order to help achieve your goals! The pellets are custom-compounded to address your unique hormone imbalance. As a result, these methods may produce fewer side effects than traditional synthetic hormones.

Inserting a BioTE pellet typically takes no longer than 10 minutes. As the hormones build-up in your system, you should start to experience lasting relief from your symptoms over the coming weeks and months. Full hormone optimization takes about six months.

After six months, you can return to ANU Medspa to reevaluate your hormone levels and make any necessary adjustments to your treatment plan.
